Recycling Guidance

Dr Renee Tonkin, founder of the environmental-education nonprofit Science Owl, says eclipse glasses illustrate “our single-use culture.” Their mixed-material construction makes them hard to recycle. Recycle Now advises that cardboard frames can go in standard cardboard recycling provided the lenses are removed first. The lenses, made of specialised solar-filter polymers or thin metal-coated polyester film, are not accepted by municipal recycling facilities and should be disposed of with residual waste.

Reuse Recommendations

Euronews notes that glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 safety standard have no expiration date and can be reused indefinitely if they show no signs of wear such as scratches, punctures, or loose filters. Glasses manufactured before 2015 degrade more quickly; eyewear from the 1999 eclipse is discouraged because the 27-year-old lenses may no longer provide adequate protection.

Skyatnight Magazine cites the American Astronomical Society’s guidance that glasses less than 10 years old may be reused when the manufacturer has verified ISO 12312-2 compliance and the filters are intact. A simple inspection—holding the glasses up to a bright light and checking for pinholes or light leakage—determines suitability. Any light passing through means the glasses should be discarded.

Donation and Redistribution

For glasses in good condition, Euronews suggests partnering with libraries, museums, and schools that collect lightly used eyewear for distribution to communities in need. It also recommends sending glasses to friends or family in regions slated for future eclipses, such as the “eclipse of the century” expected on 2 August 2027 over Luxor, Egypt, and the event on 22 July 2028 visible in Australia and New Zealand.

Alternative Viewing Methods

When glasses are unavailable or have been discarded, Skyatnight Magazine outlines “solar projection” as a safe alternative. Using two pieces of white card, a small pinhole (?3 mm) in the second card, and optionally a multi-hole object like a kitchen colander, sunlight projects a miniature image of the eclipsed Sun onto the first card. Past demonstrations include pinhole projections of the 8 April 2024 eclipse in Mexico, colander-based projections of the 14 October 2023 annular eclipse in Colorado, and a natural leaf-gap projection recorded on 26 December 2019 in Jakarta.

Why It Matters

Proper disposal, reuse, or donation of eclipse glasses reduces landfill waste from cardboard and plastic components that would otherwise accumulate after a high-profile astronomical event. Adhering to safety standards also prevents retinal damage from degraded filters.
