AI Funding Loop Highlighted by Michael Burry Raises Credit-Market Concerns

8/14/2026, 8:12:35 AM

Scale of Hyperscaler Debt and AI Spending

The Bank for International Settlements’ late-June Annual Report warned that the five largest hyperscalers—Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, Google and Meta—carry roughly $1.65 trillion in off-balance-sheet debt through special-purpose vehicles, exceeding the $1.35 trillion they report directly. Credit markets are already pricing the risk: Nvidia’s five-year credit-default-swap spread has roughly doubled over the past two months. At the same time, corporate America is projected to invest about $770 billion in AI infrastructure during 2026, creating a massive financing web that Burry describes as “circular.”

Key Figures and Financial Flows

Burry’s Bloomberg diagram maps $46 billion in direct equity stakes and $879 billion in multi-year purchase commitments moving among Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, CoreWeave, Nvidia and AMD. Oracle alone pledged $300 billion in purchases tied to OpenAI; Microsoft committed roughly $250 billion of its own capital. OpenAI, in turn, pledged $90 billion to AMD and took an equity stake in Nvidia. The loop works as follows: a hyperscaler funds an AI lab, the lab spends the money on compute from the hyperscaler, and the hyperscaler records the spend as revenue, allowing the same dollar to appear multiple times on the revenue side.

Official Reactions and Market Outlook

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly dismissed the “circular financing” label as “ridiculous,” arguing that the structure does not constitute fraud. Conversely, Chris Camillo, founder and CEO of TickerTags, contends that the loop is acceptable as long as AI delivers sufficient value, noting that Nvidia recently generated close to $48 billion in free cash flow in a quarter.

Investor Takeaway

The core issue is not alleged revenue inflation but the growing reliance on invisible debt and self-referential revenue. Investors are advised to monitor two metrics in upcoming 10-Q filings: disclosures of hyperscaler off-balance-sheet debt and Nvidia’s CDS spread, which together signal how credit markets view the sustainability of the AI financing web.
