The Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., is using its first Asian-elephant birth in 25 years—calf Linh Mai, born in February—to test an experimental approach against elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV). Staff are deliberately exposing the healthy calf to low-level EEHV samples while she still carries maternal antibodies, hoping to stimulate immunity that could protect her and future calves.
Background on EEHV and Its Threat to Asian Elephants
EEHV is the leading cause of death among young Asian elephants. Zoo officials explain that every Asian elephant will encounter the virus during its lifetime; in calves that develop clinical disease, roughly 60 percent die despite intensive care. The virus can lie dormant and is thought to spread through trunk-to-trunk contact, making early detection and prevention critical for the species’ survival.
Experimental Exposure Protocol
Veterinarian James Steeil describes the procedure: technicians collect mucus-filled fluid from the elephant’s trunk using a saline rinse, send the sample to the zoo’s EEHV laboratory, and then re-introduce a measured amount of the positive sample to Linh Mai via syringe. The goal, according to Steeil, is to give the calf the best chance to survive the infection and to develop lifelong immunity that can be studied and potentially applied to other herds. Director of Animal Care Tony Barthel notes that the method could become an additional tool for intervening at various stages of the disease, aiming to reduce the high mortality rate.
Potential Conservation Impact
If successful, the approach could provide a scalable method for protecting vulnerable calves in captive breeding programs and possibly inform strategies for wild populations. Barthel emphasizes that the project also engages zoo visitors, raising public awareness of elephant conservation and the urgency of addressing EEHV. Linh Mai’s weight has already reached 848 pounds, and staff hope she will grow into an integral member of a larger herd, contributing both genetically and as a model for disease management.
