China’s Y-20B Transport Aircraft Gains Multirole Tanker Capability

State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) aired a documentary on August 5 that announced the Y-20B “Kunpeng” transport aircraft can be converted into an aerial-refueling tanker by adding pallet-ready fuel tanks and removable refuelling equipment. The same program described the aircraft as capable of switching between transport and refuelling missions, and suggested additional roles such as bomber, airborne early-warning (AEW) and electronic-warfare (EW) tasks.

The Y-20 is China’s strategic air-lift platform; the Y-20B is an improved variant powered by domestically developed Shenyang WS-20 high-bypass turbofan engines, which CCTV dubbed the “Chinese heart.” Observers first noted the tanker-conversion potential when the third Y-20B prototype was photographed with refuelling pods in early 2022, and a Y-20B bearing refuelling alignment markings was seen at Kaifeng Air Base in 2023.

CCTV’s presentation conveyed the PLA Air Force’s (People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF)) view that transport aircraft can now fulfil multiple mission sets, a sentiment echoed by PLAAF member Pang Rongqi, who said the boundaries between transport, bomber, AEW and EW platforms are increasingly blurred. Aviation analyst Andreas Rupprecht, who tracks Chinese military aviation, noted that the conversion capability could give the PLAAF greater capacity and flexibility for operations farther into the western Pacific. Janes reported the claim but stated it cannot independently verify the presence of in-flight refuelling systems on operational Y-20Bs.

If the Y-20B’s multirole tanker-transport (MRTT) function becomes fully operational, the PLAAF could extend the range of its fighter and bomber fleets without relying on dedicated tankers, enhancing power projection beyond the first island chain. The ability to add refuelling pods quickly also offers logistical flexibility for humanitarian or disaster-relief missions.

The Y-20B entered service with the PLAAF in the mid-2020s, assigned to the 13th Transport Division’s 37th Air Regiment at Kaifeng Air Base, with the 12th Air Regiment of the 4th Transport Division likely operating an initial batch. As of the latest reports, no in-flight refuelling demonstrations have been publicly observed.
