Rep. Glenn Grothman urges Congress to aid the wealthy amid controversy over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”

At a panel on the economy in Troy, Michigan, Wisconsin Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman – a six-term congressman and longtime Donald Trump supporter – said Congress should “do a little more” for wealthy Americans. He framed the discussion around the recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill, insisting the legislation was meant to help “the average guy” and suggesting that any tax cut aimed at the rich should avoid topics like overtime pay or car loans.

The bill, described by its sponsors as a “mammoth tax and spending initiative,” passed in July 2025. Democrats opposed it because it trimmed assistance programs for low-income families, including Medicaid and free school meals. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries led a near-nine-hour filibuster in an effort to block the measure, but it ultimately passed the House 218-214 and the Senate 51-50. A tie-breaking vote was cast by Vice President J.D. Vance, and only two Republican members – Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick – voted against it.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten reported that the bill has added roughly $4 trillion to the national debt. He also noted a sharp decline in public support for government spending under Trump, with the approval rating on that issue falling from 34 percent to 12 percent – a 22-percentage-point drop.

Grothman, however, maintained that the legislation was intended to benefit ordinary Americans and argued that Congress should expand its assistance to the wealthy while continuing to help the middle class.
