History

Historical Context

In October 1987 Canada and the United States concluded the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed on 2 January 1988, phasing out tariffs over ten years. The pact lifted Canadian export share of GDP from roughly 25 % to 40 % by 1990 and near 50 % after 2000. Today, Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. negotiator Jamieson Greer cite that precedent while negotiating new sector concessions.
