How Thermal Energy Networks Work

TENs employ a system of water pipes and heat pumps to move waste heat from sources such as subway stations, sewage systems, and buildings to a shared heating-and-cooling grid. Captured heat can be stored in underground boreholes and later redistributed to nearby municipal facilities during colder months. New York City already operates TENs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the New York Botanical Garden, providing early proof of concept.
