Independent Voters Show 43-Point Split Between Ohio and Michigan Senate Contests

Fox News polling conducted August 6-10, 2026 surveyed 1,008 registered voters in Ohio and 1,006 in Michigan. The results show Democrat Sherrod Brown leading Republican Jon Husted in Ohio by eight points (53 % to 45 %). In Michigan’s open race, Republican Mike Rogers leads Democrat Abdul El-Sayed by four points (51 % to 47 %).

When the independent-voter crosstabs are examined, a stark contrast emerges. Ohio independents favor Brown 66 % to 28 % for Husted, while Michigan independents split 48 % for Rogers against 43 % for El-Sayed. Combined, the two states produce a 43-point gap in how independents view the Democratic candidates.

Both surveys indicate low confidence among independents about voting: 46 % in Ohio and 50 % in Michigan say they are certain to cast a ballot in November. Moreover, roughly half of Ohio independents and 45 % of Michigan independents say they could still change their minds.

Democrats need a net gain of four seats to reclaim the Senate majority. While losing Michigan would not be mathematically fatal, the independent-voter gap makes securing both seats considerably harder. The larger issue may be voter turnout; the gap could translate into a decisive advantage for Republicans if Ohio independents stay home while Michigan independents turn out in higher numbers.
