Series Overview
Disney+ will launch a three-part live-action/animated miniseries titled “Oswald” in February 2027. The show follows the titular “lucky rabbit,” a character originally created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927, as he navigates a modern Disney Studios setting. The series stars Kathryn Hahn, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, and Steve Martin, and blends traditional animation with live-action sequences.
Background on Oswald
Oswald appeared in a series of Universal shorts from 1927 to 1938. When Disney discovered that the rights to the character remained with Universal, his loss contributed to Disney’s development of Mickey Mouse. In 2006, Disney chief executive Bob Iger negotiated a deal with Universal that returned Oswald to Disney in exchange for sportscaster Al Michaels, who subsequently became the play-by-play announcer for NBC’s NFL coverage.
Production Details
Jon Favreau—director of “Iron Man,” “The Mandalorian,” and “Grogu”—is overseeing the miniseries. At the D23 Expo, Favreau revealed that Spanish animator Sergio Pablos, known for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Treasure Planet,” and the feature “Klaus,” led the animation team. The opening sequence places Oswald in Walt Disney’s historic office on the studio lot, where he evades a janitor and dances on the piano once used by Richard and Robert Sherman. Production included a three-week shoot at Disneyland last year.
