Historical Context

The Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816) ended with the Treaty of Sugauli, signed 4 March 1816 by the British East India Company and Nepalese leaders Bhimsen Thapa and Guru Gajraj Mishra. The treaty redrew Nepal’s borders, ceding Kumaon, Garhwal and western Terai, and required Britain to pay 200,000 rupees annually.
