Boy Racer Sentenced After High-Speed Crash Injures Three on A52

On June 22, 2025, 25-year-old Tommy-John Mustafa lost control of his heavily modified Toyota GT86 while attempting a right-hand bend on the A52 Derby Road near Nottingham. Police determined he was travelling at about 85 mph in a 30 mph speed-restriction zone imposed for roadworks. The car left the pavement, struck a group of three young men—two on council-rented e-bikes and one on foot—and ignited, after which Mustafa fled the scene and later reported the vehicle stolen. All three victims sustained multiple fractures.

Forensic collision investigators from Nottinghamshire Police recovered damaged smart glasses from Mustafa’s wrecked car. Video stored on the glasses showed Mustafa previously reaching 130 mph on the M20 and 70 mph through a built-up area, confirming a pattern of reckless driving. A breath-alcohol test after his arrest detected alcohol in his system. Mustafa initially claimed he had braked sharply and was hit from behind, but evidence contradicted that account.

Mustafa pleaded guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, two additional counts of dangerous driving captured on his smart glasses, and perverting the course of justice. Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him on August 13 to six-and-a-half years in prison, a driving disqualification of seven years and nine months, and an extended retest requirement. A separate driver, Reese Edwards of Sandiacre, who was behind Mustafa and also left the scene, earlier pleaded guilty to drink-driving and failing to stop, receiving a 20-month disqualification.
