In 1979 the Swedish Riksdag approved a constitutional amendment that replaced agnatic with absolute primogeniture, taking effect on 1 January 1980. The change back-dated succession to make Victoria, born 1977, heir apparent over her younger brother Carl Philip, born 1979, establishing Sweden as the first European monarchy to adopt gender-neutral inheritance and amended the 1810 Act of Succession.
