Reddit Added to the S&P 500, Stock Jumps
Reddit’s shares rose more than 12% after the company was announced as a new component of the benchmark S&P 500, replacing AvalonBay Communities. The change will be implemented before the start of trading on the following Tuesday, making Reddit immediately eligible for inclusion in the portfolios of numerous index funds.
Growth Profile and Revenue Composition
Reddit reported that revenue grew 61% year over year in its most recent quarter, reaching $805 million, while net income nearly tripled to $253 million from $89 million a year earlier. Annual revenue has risen from $485 million in 2021 to over $2.2 billion last year, and the firm posted its first full-year profit of $530 million in 2025. However, the company disclosed that advertising accounted for about 95% of the quarter’s $762 million revenue, leaving the business heavily dependent on a single income source.
AI Licensing as an Emerging Stream
Reddit also earns modest but high-margin revenue from licensing its data to artificial-intelligence developers. The company said AI-related licensing brings roughly $35 million to $40 million per quarter, with customers that include Alphabet’s Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform. Executives note the potential to expand these offerings, though the current contribution remains a small fraction of total revenue.
Implications for Investors
The S&P 500 inclusion positions Reddit for broader institutional ownership, which could support the stock’s recent rally. Analysts caution that the platform’s reliance on advertising makes it vulnerable to shifts in the ad market, and that any decline in traffic from search engines could further pressure earnings. Conversely, the growing AI-licensing business offers a possible diversification path, albeit one that is still in early stages. Investors will likely weigh the company’s strong growth record against the concentration risk in its revenue mix.
