Sen. Ruben Gallego Challenges New Pentagon Funding Request Amid Ongoing Iran War

Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona publicly rebuked the proposal to increase Pentagon appropriations while the United States remains engaged in the Iran conflict. He emphasized that the war, now approaching its six-month mark, appears illegal and that the United States lacks a defined end-state.

Both the House and Senate have passed war-powers resolutions directing the Trump administration to wind down the operation, though the president and senior officials contend that the War Powers Act is unconstitutional. Throughout the campaign, the administration’s strategy has shifted repeatedly, ranging from threats of severe damage to Iranian civilian infrastructure to claims of an imminent peace.

In June, White House Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought submitted a request for $87.6 billion in additional funding. The proposal earmarked $21 billion for the Defense Department to sustain critical capabilities, procure munitions, and strengthen the industrial base, alongside $17.3 billion for operational costs. Concurrently, Pentagon reports indicate that the war has depleted stockpiles of long-range missiles and interceptors, raising concerns about the sustainability of current operations.

Gallego, a former Marine who served in Iraq, stressed that without a clear mission or exit strategy, further funding would only prolong a conflict that could become a “20-year war.” He called for the president to articulate an explicit end goal before any additional appropriations are considered. The administration, meanwhile, maintains that the requested funds are essential to maintain critical capabilities and to support the American warfighter.
