Historical Context

The 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman megathrust, magnitude 9.2–9.3, triggered a tsunami that killed over 227,000 people across Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Because Indonesia sits on the Sunda megathrust of the Ring of Fire, the disaster spurred nationwide upgrades to early-warning systems and coastal infrastructure. On 15 August 2026 a magnitude 7.7 quake struck Flores, destroying 900 homes, damaging 450 more and displacing about 5,000 residents, testing those upgrades.
