Aston Villa’s Goalkeeper Deal Falls Through as Juventus Pulls Out

Negotiations between Aston Villa and Juventus over goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez have ended without a move. The Athletic reported that Juventus submitted a fresh bid for the 33-year-old Argentina international, narrowing the price gap and indicating that personal terms would not have been an obstacle. Despite the progress, Juventus decided not to proceed and redirected its attention to other targets.

While talks over Martínez’s future unfolded, Villa accelerated a separate deal for Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The club confirmed a five-year contract through 2031, with an initial fee of €30 million that could rise to €35 million with bonuses. Villa’s management has described Suzuki as the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026-27 season, regardless of the outcome of Martínez’s situation.

Martínez, who signed a new five-year contract with Villa in 2024, made 44 appearances last season as the club finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa League, securing a Champions League return. He also started all eight matches for Argentina at the summer World Cup, where the team lost 1-0 to Spain in the final. Since joining Villa from Arsenal in September 2020, Martínez has logged 256 appearances. Juventus, by contrast, concluded the Serie A campaign in sixth place and will compete in the Europa League next season.
