DNC Resolutions Call for the Abolition of ICE

At its summer meeting in Austin, Texas, the Democratic National Committee adopted two resolutions concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Resolution 27, introduced by DNC member Michele Johnson of Louisiana, urges congressional Democrats to pass legislation that would dissolve ICE, end most immigration detention, and halt enforcement actions such as workplace raids, courthouse arrests, and operations near schools or houses of worship. A companion reform measure, sponsored by DNC chairman Ken Martin, seeks stricter oversight without full abolition. Both proposals were bundled and approved by a unanimous voice vote of the full membership after clearing the Resolutions Committee (25-12 vote with one abstention). The resolutions are non-binding and do not alter the party platform for the 2028 convention.

The move arrives amid heightened immigration enforcement by the Trump administration, which has emphasized “deportation-maxxing” and set arrest records for consecutive months, according to border czar Tom Homan. Earlier this year, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer advocated for targeted reforms—such as banning face coverings for agents and restricting enforcement near schools and churches—while stopping short of calling for ICE’s elimination. A Marquette Law School national survey released August 5 found inflation and cost of living were the top concerns for 35 % of adults, while immigration and border security ranked at 5 %, down from 14 % in January. The same poll showed 40 % approval of ICE’s performance, 60 % disapproval, and 56 % of respondents still favored deportations, with 65 % of that group approving ICE’s conduct.
