On 26 December 2004 a magnitude-9.2 quake off northern Sumatra generated a tsunami that killed about 230,000 people and displaced 1.7 million, prompting the United Nations and Indonesia’s BNPB to mount a massive relief effort. Learning from that, BNPB expanded its capacity, which now directs the response to the 15 August 2026 magnitude-7.7 Flores quake that forced 5,000 evacuations and mobilised over 3,500 responders.
