Whitstable Oyster Shack Expansion Sparks Heated Local Debate

James Green, 58, director of the Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company (WOFC), has applied to extend seating for the Forge oyster shack onto a strip of beach currently used by the Whitstable Yacht Club to store boats. WOFC, which harvests about 2 million oysters a year and employs roughly 200 staff, argues the development will boost tourism and support further job growth.

WOFC traces its roots to 1793 and was revived in 1976 by Green’s father, Barrie, after the local oyster industry collapsed in the 1970s due to over-fishing, pollution and disease. Green’s sons, James and Richard, introduced industrial-scale farming of non-native Pacific rock oysters in 2008, helping re-establish Whitstable’s reputation as “Britain’s Oysteropolis.” The company now operates a hotel and four restaurants, and previously spent £1 million on a planning application for offshore metal racks that faced a decade-long legal battle.

Green contends the expansion is essential for the town’s tourism-driven economy, stating, “The Whitstable economy is based on tourism, like it or lump it.” He emphasizes that the proposal involves only decking and a pergola, not permanent structures. The Environment Agency has submitted an objection, citing potential impacts on flood defences. A district judge previously described Green as an “able and determined businessman” whose success has generated “public animosity” toward him personally.

More than 200 submissions oppose the plan. Green Party councillor Stuart Heaver echoed community concerns, noting residents are “highly protective of the beach.” The Whitstable Yacht Club, after negotiating a better lease, has withdrawn its objection, but the broader local sentiment remains skeptical.
