Background and Strategic Context
The agreement follows a broader diplomatic alignment. In 2017 Honduras voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning the United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and in 2021 it became one of the first countries, alongside the United States, Guatemala and Kosovo, to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem. The Defense Ministry’s statement described Honduras as an “important partner” in Central America that has consistently supported Israel in international forums.
