James Ellis Ford’s Hospital-Made Album — “Lost in Another World”

In late 2024, producer James Ellis Ford experienced a sudden collapse on Christmas Eve and was admitted to an A&E department in Folkestone. Blood tests eventually revealed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). After an initial transfer to St Barts Hospital in London, Ford underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, a stem-cell transplant, and three episodes of sepsis over a nine-month period. While recovering, he asked his wife Sereen to bring a laptop, a small keyboard, a microphone and an Ikea fold-up table to his room. Supported by nursing staff, he wrote and recorded the entire album *Lost in Another World* within two weeks, using the hospital environment as both studio and inspiration.

Ford, 46, is a veteran producer whose résumé includes Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Florence + the Machine, Pulp, Blur and Depeche Mode. His earlier career featured the aborted Klaxons follow-up album, which he describes as the only project he never finished.
