Suspect and Alleged Motive
Chesterfield County police identified the suspect as Camron Harris, 19, who is not enrolled at the university. Court documents allege that Harris had engaged in a verbal dispute earlier in the day with another individual, and that he later expressed intent to return to the campus and shoot. The documents also state that Harris posted an Instagram Story of the campus shortly before the attack and exchanged messages in which he discussed locating a gun and confirmed the shooting when asked if he heard the gunfire.
Police Response and Arrest
Detectives traced Harris’s phone to the campus and located him hiding in a dorm-room closet later that afternoon. Harris confirmed to investigators that the Instagram account used in the messages belonged to him and denied owning a firearm. A search of his phone revealed photos of a gun matching the weapon sent in the Instagram message. Police noted that a group chat on Harris’s Instagram, which referenced other participants in the shooting, had been deleted from his device.
Charges and Legal Status
Harris has been charged with multiple counts of use of a firearm and malicious wounding. Court records indicate that he has not yet secured legal representation. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities continue to examine the digital communications and any additional individuals who may have been involved.
