China Unveils Design for 800-Seat Flying-Wing Passenger Jet

New Flying-Wing Passenger Aircraft Concept

A research team from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre (CARDC) has released an aerodynamic model for a massive flying-wing passenger aircraft capable of carrying more than 800 passengers. The design merges the fuselage, wings and tail into a single broad lifting body, a departure from conventional airliners that separate these components.

Design Features and Capacity

The proposed aircraft measures roughly 85 metres (280 feet) in width and 43 metres in length, giving it a wingspan about 1.6 times that of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which also employs a flying-wing layout. By contrast, the Airbus A380—currently the world’s largest passenger jet—typically seats about 555 passengers. The Chinese concept therefore represents a significant increase in potential passenger capacity while exploring a radically different structural configuration.

China’s Broader Large Aircraft Programme

CARDC, a national institute that has contributed to the C919 narrow-body airliner and the Y-20 military transport, is developing the flying-wing model alongside other ambitious projects. These include the C929, a 280-seat long-range wide-body jet slated for its first flight around 2030, and the C949 supersonic airliner, which draws on technology similar to NASA’s X-59. The flying-wing aircraft does not yet have a public name and remains a conceptual study within China’s expanding large-aircraft portfolio.

Potential Implications for Aviation

If realized, the 800-seat flying-wing could reshape the economics of ultra-high-capacity air travel, offering airlines a single-deck alternative to multi-deck designs like the A380. The integrated lifting body may also yield aerodynamic efficiencies, though the practical challenges of passenger comfort, emergency evacuation and airport compatibility remain to be addressed.

Official Outlook

CARDC officials describe the project as a “pioneering” exploration of more radical aircraft configurations, emphasizing its role in expanding China’s technical expertise rather than presenting an immediate commercial product. The institute indicates that further research and testing will be required before any prototype could be built.
