Taiwan’s Record-Breaking Giant: The 84-Meter “Heaven Sword” Fir

Discovery and Measurement

In January 2023, the research collective known as “Taiwan tree seekers” located a towering Taiwania fir along the Da’an River after a 20-kilometre river trek and two days of steep hiking. The measurement established it as the tallest known tree in Taiwan and in all of East Asia.

Mapping the Giants

Early expeditions beginning in August 2014 focused on the “Chilan Three Sisters” in the Cilan conservation area, where the tallest measured 69.3 meters. Recognizing the limits of ground-based estimates, the team partnered with remote-sensing specialists at National Cheng Kung University to employ LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) from aircraft. By 2020 the project expanded to a citizen-science effort, enlisting hundreds of Taiwanese volunteers to review LiDAR profiles. Automated algorithms initially mis-identified 93 % of candidate trees, but human reviewers filtered false positives, enabling the creation of the “Taiwan Giant Tree Map” by the end of 2022. The map listed 941 individual trees taller than 65 meters.

Notable Clusters and Carbon Storage

The LiDAR map guided researchers to dense concentrations of giant firs, described as “temples of giants.” Near Mt. Benya, a one-hectare area contains 11 trees exceeding 65 meters, while a later survey documented a stand of roughly 30 giants in the “pure forest” of the Great Ghost Lake region. In 2024 a focused study of the “Tao Tree” valley—home to Taiwan’s third-tallest tree—measured a total above-ground carbon density of 1,384.5 megagrams per hectare, placing these forests among the world’s most carbon-dense ecosystems.

Ecological and Cultural Significance

With about 60 % of Taiwan’s 36,000 square-kilometre land still forested—approximately 950 million trees—the giant Taiwania firs contribute substantially to carbon sequestration and biodiversity across elevations ranging from tropical lowlands to alpine tundra. Their preservation, aided by remote sensing and community involvement, underscores the importance of integrating technology and local stewardship in protecting rare old-growth habitats.
