Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Visit South Korea

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry announced that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to Seoul later this month. The visit marks Wang’s first official trip to the country in five years. Upon arrival, Wang is scheduled to meet President Lee Jae Myung at the Blue House, where they will discuss bilateral relations and regional affairs and convey Wang’s regards to Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to the presidential office.

The meeting follows a period of limited high-level exchanges between the two neighbours. Relations have been strained by disputes over trade, security on the Korean Peninsula and differing positions on regional issues. The scheduled talks come ahead of the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, a venue where both governments are expected to engage further.

In addition to the presidential audience, Wang will hold a luncheon and talks with South Korea’s National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. The two officials are expected to exchange views on South Korea-China relations, developments on the Korean Peninsula and other regional and international matters. Wang will also meet Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, followed by a dinner hosted by the South Korean foreign ministry.
