Scientists attribute the outsized blooms to nutrient-rich runoff—particularly nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural producers such as Brazil—and shifting oceanic conditions. Some private firms are exploring commercial uses for the algae, hoping to offset collection costs and create new revenue streams.
