Court documents obtained by local media identify the alleged shooter as Camron Harris, a 19-year-old who is not enrolled at VSU. Harris was apprehended more than 14 hours after the shooting after detectives pinged his phone to the campus and found him concealed in a dorm-room closet. Instagram activity linked to Harris shows a story of the campus posted less than 20 minutes before the attack and a series of messages in which he discussed locating a gun, sent a photo of a handgun, and later wrote, “We js got the shootin.” Harris confirmed to detectives that the Instagram account was his and that no one else used it. A search of his phone revealed photographs of a firearm in a green backpack that matched the gun shown in the Instagram messages; however, police did not recover a weapon in the backpack.
Charges and Legal Status
Following his detention, Chesterfield County authorities obtained eight felony warrants—four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Harris is being held without bond at the county jail, and police indicated that additional charges could be filed.
Impact on Victims and Community
The injured parties, none of whom were VSU students except the 20-year-old, received medical treatment; the student has since been released from the hospital. The shooting has heightened concerns about campus safety at the historically Black university and prompted a law-enforcement review of social-media monitoring practices.
