Toyota’s Vibration Test to Diagnose Recalled V6 Engines

Toyota and Lexus have recalled more than a quarter-million trucks and SUVs equipped with the V35A 3.5-liter V6 engine. The recall stems from debris left in the manufacturing process that can degrade the #1 main bearing, which supports the crankshaft. Over time, this wear can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Because the defect may not be visible without disassembly, Toyota needed a non-invasive method to assess bearing health across the large fleet.

Toyota engineers devised a diagnostic that uses a small plastic hammer and an accelerometer. Technicians first change the engine’s fluids and control for other variables, then attach the accelerometer to the crank bolt. Striking the crank pulley at the 3:00 position generates a vibration whose resonant frequency reflects the condition of the #1 main bearing. The hammer provides feedback to ensure the impact strength falls within a calibrated range, allowing the software to capture reliable data.

The collected vibration data are processed by inspection software that also incorporates the vehicle’s service-life information. If the software cannot confirm that the bearing will remain free from abnormal wear, the dealer is instructed to replace the engine under the recall. Toyota emphasizes that the procedure is intended to identify engines at risk before symptoms appear; trucks already exhibiting knocking, rough running, or no-start should be taken to a dealer immediately, according to the same spokesperson.
