Melanie Lynskey Balances Hollywood Success with a Deep-Rooted Love for New Zealand

Melanie Lynskey says her primary goal today is simply to keep acting, a dream she achieved early in her career. While she now receives “almost all great” offers, she finds herself turning down projects that would pull her away from family life. The actress describes New Zealand as “home” despite the difficulty of buying a house there, noting that the market is “very expensive” and that she and husband Jason Ritter are still searching for a property. Lynskey’s résumé has expanded from her breakout in Peter Jackson’s *Heavenly Creatures* to Emmy-nominated performances in *The Last of Us* (guest actor) and *Yellow Jackets* (lead actress, two nominations, Critics’ Choice win). She has also led the Hulu drama *Candy* and appeared in the true-story miniseries *Pike River* (2025), portraying Anna Osborne. Her latest screen work is the Netflix film *Don’t Say Good Luck*, in which she plays Elizabeth Birenbaum, a New Jersey mother battling cancer while raising three children. The film premiered on Netflix on August 14.
