Portland Adult Soap Box Derby: Community, Creativity, and Gravity

The Portland Adult Soap Box Derby gathered 42 gravity-powered cars of wildly varied designs in Mt. Tabor Park, an extinct volcano in Portland, Oregon. Participants built vehicles from wood, metal, plastic and even decorative materials such as fake fur and mirror tiles. While a few entrants focus on speed, most prioritize imaginative themes—this year’s lineup included a giant sloth head, a Flintstones-style car, a “Heated Rivalry” zamboni, and a replica of Oregon’s infamous exploded dead whale. All racers sign waivers and the fire department stands by in a miniature red derby car, underscoring the event’s blend of fun and safety.

The soap-box concept dates to early automobile exhibitions and entered popular culture through 1930s national races in Ohio and mid-century television shows. Portland’s adult-focused version celebrated its 27th annual run, evolving from a speed-centric kids’ sport into a hybrid of race, art installation, and block-party atmosphere.
