Human Sacrifice Remains Discovered at Lima’s Huaca Pucllana Pyramid

Archaeologists announced on Tuesday that they had uncovered the skeletal remains of an adult buried near the base of Huaca Pucllana, an ancient adobe pyramid in Lima’s Miraflores and San Isidro districts. The body was positioned inside a canal, lying on its left side with the skull oriented toward the pyramid and the Pacific Ocean. Researchers interpret the burial as a ritual offering, likely a sacrifice performed when the canal that fed a ceremonial pool was deliberately sealed.

The Lima culture thrived along Peru’s central coast from the first to the seventh centuries, predating the Inca Empire by roughly 700 years. Huaca Pucllana served as one of the principal ceremonial and administrative centers for this culture, which vanished centuries before Spanish conquistadors founded the city of Lima in 1535. Today the site is a public attraction surrounded by parks, upscale apartments, and a restaurant that serves local dishes. Peru’s government reports that more than 400 archaeological sites exist within the metropolitan area.

Gladys Paz led the excavation and explained that the newly found bones will help scholars reconstruct the ritual practices of the Lima people. Pieter Van Dalen, an archaeology professor at the National University of San Marcos who was not involved in the dig, noted that tombs, mummified remains, and other burial artifacts are commonly uncovered along Peru’s coast, often during construction projects such as gas-pipe installations.
