Haitian Detentions Rise in Springfield, Ohio Amid TPS Termination

Federal immigration agents have been present in Springfield, Ohio, almost daily since early last week, detaining at least 15 Haitians, according to local community leaders. In addition, more than 100 other Haitians have been summoned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices located miles away, where they received electronic ankle monitors that track their movements. The heightened enforcement activity has prompted many community members to stay indoors, isolate themselves, and, in some cases, refuse to eat.

The surge follows a Supreme Court decision that allowed the Trump administration’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians. TPS had previously shielded roughly 330,000 Haitian nationals across the United States from deportation and provided legal work authorization. The court’s ruling removed that protection, leaving Haitian residents vulnerable to immigration enforcement actions.
