China Proposes Robotic Fortresses for South China Sea Islands

A defence concept put forward by the Chinese coastguard envisions the contested islands of the South China Sea defended by a coordinated swarm of autonomous machines rather than by personnel. The idea was outlined in a paper published in July in the state-run weapons industry and military-technology journal *Command Control & Simulation*. Researchers from the China Coast Guard Academy’s ship command department and Dalian Maritime University’s Marine Electrical Engineering College authored the proposal, which was supervised by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
