Charles Roberts Named CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital announced that Dr. Charles W. M. Roberts will assume the role of president and chief executive officer on January 1, 2027. Roberts, currently executive vice president and director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center, succeeds Dr. James R. Downing, who led the nonprofit for 12 years before moving to a faculty position in the Global Pediatric Medicine department.

Founded in 1962 by actor-philanthropist Danny Thomas, St. Jude has seen childhood-cancer survival rates rise from roughly 20 % at its inception to more than 80 % today. The hospital’s model provides all treatment at no cost to patients and families, a policy Roberts affirmed will continue. Funding relies heavily on philanthropic support from ALSAC, the hospital’s fundraising arm, which the Chronicle of Philanthropy reports raised an average of $2.3 billion per year between 2021 and 2023, making it the second-largest U.S. fundraiser after United Way.
