Team physician Dr. Frank Jobe performed a tendon-transfer reconstruction that was then considered a 100-to-1 long shot. John missed the 1975 season but returned in 1976, becoming the first pitcher to successfully resume a major-league career after such a procedure. The operation later became known colloquially as “Tommy John surgery.”
