Tides of Annihilation Preview Shows an Ambitious Chinese AAA Action Game

8/19/2026, 8:37:01 PM

Background: Chinese Studios Targeting the Global AAA Market

China’s gaming revenue has long been dominated by mobile titles, keeping developers separate from Western console and PC markets. The 2024 launch of Black Myth: Wukong—sold over 30 million copies—showed the potential of Chinese-originated triple-A experiences. Following that, studios such as S-Game released Phantom Blade Zero, and newer studios are now aiming directly at Western audiences. Eclipse Glow Games, a Tencent-backed studio founded two years ago, is one of those newcomers.

Core Preview: Gameplay, Combat, and Visual Design

The two-hour hands-on highlighted a layered combat system built around protagonist Gwendolyn. Basic attacks map to X and Y on an Xbox controller; counters and stagger-breakers use RB. A “Burst Attack” becomes available after filling an on-screen meter and is triggered by pressing both sticks simultaneously.

A distinctive feature is the d-pad-controlled Knights of the Round Table that fight alongside Gwendolyn. Each knight offers a different combat style—ranged or melee—and can be summoned by pressing attack buttons with the d-pad.

Combat also incorporates a badge system that modifies damage, life-steal, and health-regeneration, encouraging aggressive play.

Setting and Narrative Fusion

The game blends modern London with the mythic realm of Avalon. Recognizable landmarks such as the British Museum appear under the fictional name Great Russell Museum. As the narrative progresses, the museum’s interior morphs to reflect Chinese, Egyptian, and Japanese cultural themes, while the surrounding city is overtaken by a mysterious invasion.

Gwendolyn’s companion Niniane, who can transform into a bird, and the quest for a Grail Shard drive the story, placing the player in a hybrid of urban exploration and Arthurian legend.

Boss Encounters and Spectacle

The preview showcased several high-profile boss fights:

  • Geraint, a samurai-turned-oni in the Japanese exhibit, demands precise knight selection and timing.
  • Anubis, an Egyptian-themed deity fused with Arthurian armor, introduces barrier mechanics that test movement and positioning.
  • Mordred, reimagined as a female antagonist seeking Niniane, escalates into a battle against a massive dragon reminiscent of the Pendragon.

These encounters feature dynamic cut-scenes—dragons dueling in the sky, environmental transformations, and large-scale visual effects comparable to *Final Fantasy XVI* boss battles.

Official Perspective: Studio Goals

Director Ary Chen explained that Eclipse Glow Games set the story in a recognizable Western location to “reach a more global audience” with a universally accessible narrative. The studio’s pedigree includes veterans from franchises such as *Assassin’s Creed*, *Persona*, *For Honor*, and *Like a Dragon*.

Critical Observations

IGN senior video editor Tristan Ogilvie noted that while the combat is “extremely satisfying,” Gwendolyn’s movement controls still need refinement, particularly run speed and double-jump range.

Data & Statistics

  • Black Myth: Wukong – over 30 million copies sold (2024).
  • Phantom Blade Zero – released in October.

These figures illustrate growing confidence among Chinese developers to invest in AAA projects for international markets.
