Historical Context

Following the United States’ May 2018 exit from the JCPOA and renewed sanctions, Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz. The tension erupted in the May- and June-2019 Gulf of Oman attacks on Front Altair and Kokuka Courageous, which the U.S. blamed on Iran and met with a troop surge. The UAE’s trade suspension after detecting ballistic missiles echoes those 2019 strikes that cut about $2 billion of oil-trade.
