Warner Bros. Pictures is currently negotiating to acquire the feature-film rights to Allen Levi’s novel *Theo of Golden*. Tom Hanks is in talks to portray the title character and will also serve as a producer alongside Gil Netter and Gary Goetzman. The author is slated to act as an executive producer. Jesse Ehrman and Sheila Walcott are overseeing the project for Warner Bros., while literary-affairs executive Ian Dalrymple is credited with bringing the property to the studio’s attention.

Levi first self-published the book in 2023. After a modest launch, Simon & Schuster released a wide edition in October 2025. The novel has since sold more than 3.5 million copies in the United States, spent over nine consecutive months on the New York Times bestseller list, and was the highest-selling print book in America for 2026 to date. It has been translated into 43 languages and reached #1 bestseller status in the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands.

The production team combines veteran collaborators: Gil Netter, known for adaptations such as *Marley & Me* and *The Blind Side*; Gary Goetzman, Hanks’s longtime partner at Playtone; and Hanks himself. Parallel Project: “The Comebacker”
In addition to *Theo of Golden*, Hanks will star as a pitching coach for the New York Mets in *The Comebacker*, directed by Marielle Heller. The film, based on a Dave Eggers short story, also features Callum Turner as the young pitcher whose career is altered by a batted ball. Sony Pictures has acquired the project, and principal photography is slated for early fall.
