History

Historical Context

On 6 September 2007 Israel’s air force, using eight fighter-jets, bombed the Al-Kibar site in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor desert to halt a suspected nuclear reactor built with North Korean assistance. The strike followed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s decision under the 1981 Begin Doctrine after U.S. intelligence confirmed the program. In 2011 the IAEA verified the facility had been a reactor.
