Subnautica 2 “Buddy System” Update Expands Multiplayer Interaction and Quality-of-Life Features

8/20/2026, 11:02:49 AM

Update Overview

Unknown Worlds Entertainment released a free “Buddy System” update for *Subnautica 2* that can be downloaded automatically via Steam. The patch introduces a suite of multiplayer-focused tools, visual refinements, and performance tweaks. Players who do not see the update may need to restart Steam or contact support.

Cross-Platform Voice and Direct Interaction

The update adds cross-platform proximity voice chat, with three modes—always on, push-to-talk, and always off—and a distance-based attenuation that makes distant teammates harder to hear. A new tracking tag can be placed in carryables to act as a short-range beacon, extending black-box range when held during reprinting. Players can now revive one another, preserving equipment and restoring a small oxygen supply, or choose immediate reprint at their assigned Biobed. An expanded emote wheel provides wave, clap, thumbs-up, thumbs-down, and frustrated gestures, usable on land or underwater and interruptible by gameplay input. Direct inventory exchange between players is also enabled.

Base-Building and Environmental Adjustments

Base-building receives UI alignment guides, size-snapping for room deconstruction, and a functional trash can that destroys items after a five-second delay. Construction is now prohibited inside Great Jaw, and obstructing items are listed for easier resolution. Visual cues such as a distinct beep and a small screen flash highlight nearby upgrade spots. Several environmental visual effects were refined, including VFX for the Graveyard’s Water Slugs, Tongue Thief impacts, and Hammerhead collisions, while an odd blue outline on the Collector Leviathan was removed.

Vehicles, Tools, and Equipment Enhancements

The Feedback Resonator now stuns creatures for ten seconds instead of merely repelling them. Scanner HUD icons for acid sources and tallshrooms were added, and the Repair Tool unlocks after two scans. Tadpoles destroyed outside the Early Access fence automatically teleport back inside for recovery. UI clutter was reduced with larger icons at close range and hover-text for distant signals. Save codes can be pasted directly into the cloud-save download field, and the builder menu now retains its scroll position.

Privacy Policy and Performance Updates

A new privacy-policy notice dated July 15 will appear on first play. The patch also introduces Dynamic Frame Generation modes for RTX 5000-series GPUs (5× and 6×), with automatic selection to balance performance. These additions aim to improve both user transparency and visual fidelity across supported hardware.
