Historical Context

In 2005 RNLI launched Safe Swimmers after 1,200 drownings in 2004. Since 2001 it began beach lifeguard services, reaching 100 beaches by the decade’s end and aiding over 10,000 people annually. The recent Shoreham-by-Sea tragedy prompted Sussex Police, HM Coastguard and politicians including Andy Burnham and Rishi Sunak to echo the 2005 call for nationwide water-safety education.
