Kansas Enforces Trans Bathroom Ban; Trans Men Protest by “Complying”

On February 13, the Kansas legislature overrode Governor Laura Kelly’s veto and enacted Senate Bill 244. The law mandates that anyone using a government-owned restroom must do so according to the sex listed on their birth certificate, effectively requiring transgender men to use women’s facilities and prohibiting updates to driver’s licenses and state IDs that reflect gender identity. The ACLU of Kansas notes that the statute also allows private citizens to sue for up to $1,000 in damages if they believe a transgender person has violated the rule.

Shortly after the law’s enactment, transgender man Charles Osman organized the “SB244 Compliance Crew.” The group deliberately enters women’s restrooms in public facilities—libraries, swimming pools, and water parks—exactly as the statute requires. In Dodge City, police were called; officers asked the protesters to describe their genitalia for roughly 20 minutes before releasing them. In Emporia, staff were already aware of the law, and no police interaction occurred, though a woman briefly exited the restroom to complain.
