2026 WNBA Playoff Picture as the Regular Season Winds Down

8/21/2026, 2:10:01 AM

End-of-Season Playoff Landscape

With just over two weeks of games left, the 2026 WNBA season will pause from late August to mid-September for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin. No team has more than ten games remaining, and the eight playoff spots are largely set. The Dallas Wings sit eight games ahead of the expansion Portland Fire for the final berth, while the Minnesota Lynx, Golden State Valkyries, Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces occupy the top four positions.

Projected Seedings and Gaps

The analysis projects the final seed order as follows:

1. Minnesota Lynx – a four-game lead over the Valkyries and the league’s tiebreaker advantage, effectively securing the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

2. Golden State Valkyries – positioned for the No. 2 seed, holding a one-and-a-half-game cushion over the Fever and the tiebreaker edge.

3. Indiana Fever – three games behind the Lynx, half a game ahead of the Aces, and a single-game margin over the Dream.

4. Las Vegas Aces – two games back of the Valkyries, owning the tiebreaker with them and possessing the league’s easiest remaining schedule.

5. Atlanta Dream – one-and-half games behind the Fever, with a pending tiebreaker against Washington.

6. Washington Mystics – a surprise playoff contender, a game behind the Dream and two and a half games behind the Fever.

7. New York Liberty – seventh place, a game behind the Mystics, but holding tiebreakers over Washington and Las Vegas.

8. Dallas Wings – despite the loss of No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd to knee surgery, they retain a four-and-a-half-game lead over Portland for the final spot.

Tiebreaker Rules and Schedule Strength

If teams finish with identical records, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, followed by winning percentage against .500-plus opponents, point differential in head-to-head games, and finally overall point differential. The league’s own description of the multi-team elimination process is also noted. Current strength-of-schedule rankings (lower numbers indicate easier opponents) are: Aces 0.273, Wings 0.350, Valkyries 0.433, Mystics 0.449, Dream 0.463, Fever 0.544, Liberty 0.590, Lynx 0.593.

Outlook for Contending Teams

The Lynx’s franchise-record 34-win season last year and recent victories over the Aces and Valkyries have cemented their lead. The Valkyries, despite a recent loss to Minnesota, remain the clear second seed. The Fever’s five-game winning streak has propelled them into third, though they trail the Valkyries in the tiebreaker. The Aces, despite a 6-5 post-All-Star record, could still climb to No. 2 thanks to their schedule advantage. The Dream’s recent road win over the Aces keeps them in the top-three mix, while the Mystics’ rise from .500 a month ago marks a notable turnaround for the league’s youngest team. Injuries continue to hamper the Liberty, leaving them vulnerable despite holding several tiebreakers. The Wings, even with Fudd’s season-ending surgery, are projected to clinch the eighth spot given their easy schedule and lead over Portland.

Upcoming Timeline

The league’s pause for the World Cup will occur from late August through mid-September, after which the remaining regular-season games will conclude. Final seedings will be locked in once those games are played, setting the stage for the postseason matchups.
