Historical Context

In 1957 the U.S. Air Force and Army Corps of Engineers created the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, a twelve-site Arctic radar network—including Cape Newenham—costing $1.2 billion. After the Cold-War system was replaced by the North Warning System in the early 1990s and the sites were remediated, the abandoned Cape Newenham runway proved hazardous when an August 2024 Cessna 441 crash killed eight.
