Ukraine Expands Long-Range Drone Strikes on Russian Oil Infrastructure

Overnight in late August, Russian Telegram media channels reported that Ukrainian drones struck the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, and the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in Krasnodar Krai. NASA’s FIRMS satellite system detected a fire at the terminal and at the adjacent 500-kilovolt Taman electrical substation that supplies Russian-occupied Crimea. In a separate incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that drones hit an oil refinery in the Perm region, more than 1,600 kilometers from the Ukraine-Russia border, identifying the facility as Lukoil’s Permnefteorgsintez crude-processing plant, where a large fire erupted.

Ukraine has pursued a sustained campaign of long-range drone attacks on Russian oil processing and export sites, aiming to curtail revenue and fuel supplies that support Moscow’s war effort. The TANECO refinery was previously struck on Aug. 10, and earlier attacks have hit the TAIF-NK refinery in July and the Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical plant in May and June. The Tamanneftegaz terminal has also been targeted before, with damage to storage tanks and pipelines reported in June.
