Author’s Path and Motivation
Levi spent three decades as a lawyer, singer-songwriter, and later earned a degree in Scottish fiction before turning to writing in his late 60s. He says the story’s seed came from a coffee-shop portrait wall in his hometown of Columbus, Georgia, and from his late brother Gary, whose love of people inspired the titular character.

Sales Strategy and Publicity
Levi and Ritchie employed a “low-fi” publicity model: Ritchie posted about the novel in Facebook groups and compiled a “Good Souls to Connect with” list of readers, many of whom shared the book with cancer-support networks. The grassroots effort helped the title climb the New York Times bestseller list, where it has remained for 36 weeks.
Film Rights and Future Projects
In the fall of 2025, Atria Books (an imprint of Simon & Schuster) acquired the rights and released the paperback in November. Negotiations are now underway for a film adaptation; Tom Hanks is in talks to star and co-produce, while Levi will serve as executive producer. A sequel, tentatively titled *Ellen of Golden*, is already in development.
