Historical Context

In July 2021 the FIA introduced sprint qualifying at Silverstone, the first F1 weekend since the 1959 German Grand Prix to feature two races. The new format cut Friday to a single 60-minute practice and awarded three points to the sprint winner, which Max Verstappen claimed, while Lewis Hamilton later won the Grand Prix. The change prompted further format experiments.
