Russia Signals Openness to US-Backed Peace Ideas
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told News.ru that Moscow will consider any “reasonable proposals and ideas” that fit President Vladimir Putin’s objectives and reflect “realities on the ground.” He emphasized that the United States’ ability to influence Kyiv and its European backers is now the key factor for any diplomatic breakthrough.
Recent Negotiation Attempts and Stalled Talks
Earlier this year, U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff led a series of talks that produced a 28-point Washington peace plan, but the Kremlin reported no progress and the next round scheduled for early March was cancelled after the United States launched its war on Iran alongside Israel.
Ongoing Hostilities and Infrastructure Damage
In the past weeks, both sides have intensified attacks. Russian strikes in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region set fire to five residential buildings, killing two women, according to state emergency services on Telegram. An attack in Zaporizhia killed one person and injured another, governor Ivan Federov reported. Ukraine’s Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said Russian attacks have damaged or destroyed more than 300 fuel stations in the last six months, causing “significant losses for our economy.”
Across the border, a Ukrainian drone hit an industrial facility in Russia’s Perm region, governor Dmitry Makhonin confirmed, while Russian drones also damaged a border crossing in Odesa and a military air base in Volgograd. Finland’s border guard noted a suspected Russian reconnaissance plane violated Finnish airspace in the western Gulf.
Official Statements & Responses
Ryabkov’s remarks framed Russia’s willingness to listen as contingent on alignment with Putin’s goals, especially regarding the Donbas, demilitarisation, and NATO non-membership for Ukraine. Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine needs concrete results from any renewed talks.
