Capcom Moves Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release to September 4, 2026

8/23/2026, 10:54:22 AM

Release Date Shift and Platform Availability

Capcom announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on Friday, September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and other storefronts), and Nintendo Switch 2. The launch moved forward from the originally scheduled September 25, 2026 after feedback from the publicly available demo. A Steam listing showing September 3 in some regions is identified by Capcom as a time-zone display artifact. All three editions—Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe—share the same September 4 window.

Background: First New Onimusha in Two Decades

The title is the franchise’s first brand-new entry in more than 20 years. Producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei told *Famitsu* that development of the Switch 2 version began after the core game was underway, and they believe the hybrid console can deliver an experience comparable to the other platforms.

Editions, Pricing, and Pre-Order Bonuses

Three retail tiers are available at launch:

  • Standard Edition – $69.99 – base game, equipable Charm: Lion Dog, and cosmetic Sword Appearance: Sealed Curse.
  • Deluxe Edition – $79.99 – adds Charm: White Monkey and Sword Appearance: White Lion.
  • Premium Deluxe Edition – $89.99 – includes all Deluxe items plus a haori, extra outfits, and a mini digital soundtrack.

Capcom clarified that the digital pre-order bonus is now an Early Adopter Bonus, claimable for a limited period after launch. No paid early-access period is attached to any edition, and price differences reflect cosmetic and soundtrack additions rather than extra story content.

Gameplay Demo and In-Game Rewards

A free demo of roughly 30 minutes showcases an early segment at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and a duel with Musashi’s rival Sasaki Ganryu. Progress does not carry over, but retaining the demo save file awards the Charm: Kubi Akari in the full game. The protagonist is modeled after legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, portraying a young Musashi bound to the mystical Oni Gauntlet. Capcom emphasized that the game is not intended as a “Soulslike” experience; it focuses on traditional action-adventure swordplay with larger explorable areas.

Official Statements from Capcom and Development Team

*Capcom* said the release-date adjustment was a direct response to player feedback on the demo, and the Early Adopter Bonus will be claimable shortly after launch. In an August preview, the company pushed back against comparisons to *Sekiro*, asserting that the title is designed around satisfying sword combat rather than punishing, die-and-repeat mechanics.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei reiterated confidence that the Switch 2 version can match the performance of the other platforms.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

Some storefronts list September 3 for the Steam version; Capcom attributes this to a time-zone artifact. No other platforms show a differing date, and the company has not provided further explanation.
