Buc-ee’s Lawsuit Against Beaver’s Mini Mart Ignites Ohio Backlash

In late July, Texas-based convenience-store chain Buc-ee’s filed a federal trademark suit in Ohio, alleging that Beaver’s Mini Mart’s beaver logo is “too similar” to Buc-ee’s trademarked mascot, Bucky the beaver. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and follows Buc-ee’s request for an injunction to stop the smaller store’s use of the animal image. The dispute emerged shortly after Buc-ee’s opened a 74,000-square-foot location near Dayton in April, while Beaver’s Mini Mart has operated in Beavercreek since 2017 under its current name.

Buc-ee’s has a pattern of protecting its animal mascots. Earlier this year, while preparing to enter Ohio, the chain sued the northern-Ohio holding company for Mickey Mart gas stations, arguing that its “Mickey the Moose” logo could be confused with Buc-ee’s beaver.

Buc-ee’s said the suit is necessary to safeguard its valuable trademark, noting that it first learned of Beaver’s Mini Mart when owner Vic Boparai filed a trade-name registration on Oct. 23. The chain claims repeated attempts to contact Boparai failed, forcing legal action. Boparai issued a brief statement acknowledging the filing but did not address the merits.
